How to connect a laptop to the internet?

I have an Acer Extensa 2300. I want to connect it to an existing internet connection thing that we use for our desktop computer. So I plug in the modem thing that plugs into our desktop into my laptop, but it doesn’t work. Do I have to set up something on my laptop? I’d like it to be wireless. If I plug a wireless adapter into my laptop would it be able to connect to the modem that is used for the desktop?

I have a Windows XP and i’m wondering how to make myself a computer administrator on a limited account? I already tried to start up my computer and press the F8 button but for me it doesn’t show safe mode. It says "Insert CD-ROM or hard drive"… something like that.

Does anyone know any other way to switch a limited account to a computer administrator? And I can’t ask another computer administrator on my computer because no one in my family is an administrator, but I would like to be so please helpp!!

I really want to get a notebook and sims 3, but i don’t have infinite money, so what’s the cheapest?

I hate carrying it in my backpack, it’s so heavy and can get easily damaged. However I haven’t seen anyone with both, it’s always one or the other. I can’t fit all my stuff into the laptop bag so it’s either both or just the backpack. Oh and my laptop is about 14 inches so the bag is not the smallest. I’m afraid it would look awkward if I brought both.

Are laptop batteries all standard or can I get one that lasts longer cos my laptop only lasts 1HR on full charge.

I have road runner internet service a wireless G broadband router. I am trying to connect a router to my desktop so I will be able to use the internet on my laptop computer . Whenever i start a video call/ web cam/voice call on live messenger, skype, google talk, yahoo messenger, my computer totally freezes, and gives an echo. I have to restart it manually. Sometimes it comes with a blue screen, and it restarts itself.
I am using Vista, and this situation existed when i had XP on this computer. What is wrong? Hardware problems? There is no virus detected after i scanned the computer with Kaspersky.

I have a laptop that I intend to have running 24/7 (with minimal breaks). How often should a laptop be shut down for a break (possibly from heat) without causing damage? How long should a laptop be left on for?
